Tight End
The Tight End is one of the most versatile positions in American football, combining the roles of a blocker and a receiver. Think of them as a hybrid between an offensive lineman and a wide receiver.
Offensive Guards
The Offensive Guard is a crucial part of the offensive line, responsible for protecting the quarterback and creating running lanes. Guards are typically strong, physical players who do a lot of the “dirty work” in the trenches.
Offensive Tackle
The Offensive Tackle is a key position on the offensive line, responsible for protecting the edges of the offence and blocking some of the defense’s best pass rushers. They’re usually the biggest and most athletic linemen.
Center
The Center is the anchor of the offensive line and one of the smartest players on the field. They start every play and play a major role in communication and protection.
DEFENCE
Nose Tackle
The Nose Tackle is a powerful defensive position that lines up in the middle of the defensive line and is responsible for stopping the run and controlling the interior.
Defensive Tackle
The Defensive Tackle is a key player on the defensive line, responsible for stopping the run and pressuring the quarterback from the inside. They line up between the defensive ends and battle in the trenches every play.
Defensive End
The Defensive End is a key position on the defensive line responsible for containing the outside run and rushing the quarterback from the edge. They are often some of the most athletic and explosive defenders on the field.
Linebacker
The Linebacker is one of the most important and versatile defensive positions in American football. They act as the “middle leaders” of the defence, responsible for stopping the run, covering passes, and blitzing the quarterback.
Cornerback
The Cornerback is a key position in the defensive secondary, responsible for covering wide receivers and preventing completed passes. They are often the fastest and most agile defenders on the field.
Strong Safety
The Strong Safety is a defensive back position that combines coverage skills, tackling ability, and run support. They are one of the most physical players in the secondary and often play closer to the line of scrimmage than a free safety.
Free Safety
The Free Safety is a defensive back position focused on deep pass coverage, reading the offence, and preventing big plays. They are often considered the “last line of defence”.
SPECIAL TEAMS
Kicker
The Kicker is a special teams player responsible for scoring field goals, extra points, and kicking off the ball. While they only play a few moments each game, they can have a huge impact on the final score.
Punter
The Punter is a special teams player responsible for kicking the ball downfield to improve field position when the offence cannot get a first down. Their job is less about scoring and more about controlling where the opponent starts their drive.
